Le Chat Noir Bookstore & Cat Lounge in Redlands blends two cozy interests—books and cats—into a laid-back local retreat. This cat cafe feels like a quiet nook where you can settle in with a book while enjoying the company of rescued cats who roam freely, many of whom have found a safe haven here after difficult pasts.

The space itself is thoughtfully arranged over two levels. Upstairs, you’ll find a small café serving well-made coffee and treats, perfect for a casual pause in your day. Downstairs is the heart of the experience: the cat lounge. Visitors pay for timed sessions to spend with the cats, which encourages a calm, unhurried atmosphere. If you’re hoping to interact with the cats, mornings and late afternoons tend to be the liveliest—around midday, many cats like to nap, so that might be less ideal for playtime.

The staff are known for being approachable and knowledgeable, with a friendly vibe that makes the lounge feel like a welcoming extension of the neighborhood. They openly share helpful tips about individual cat personalities—for instance, there’s one cat with a bit of a feisty side, which visitors appreciate knowing ahead of time. The café also emphasizes care and respect for its feline residents, with admission fees supporting their wellbeing.

This spot naturally attracts cat lovers who enjoy a tranquil setting, readers looking for a quiet break, or anyone curious about supporting local animal rescue efforts. It’s often described as a space to unwind quietly rather than a bustling hangout, so it works well as a relaxing solo outing, a low-key date idea, or a mindful visit to decompress with feline company.

While it’s not a place to rush through, spending an hour or so here can feel like slipping into a cozy corner where the city pauses around you. If you find yourself wanting regular doses of kitty cuddles, the membership option is worth looking into—it speaks to the community feel cultivated by this Redlands spot.

Super friendly staff, great people! If you have a love for books and cats this is the perfect place for you. The environment makes you feel at home. It’s quiet and peaceful. The cats are so loving and friendly. There is only one cat that the staff will warn you about (Domino) lol he’s a little spicy but he’s adorable. I’m definitely going back any chance I get. Such a great experience

Avoid 1200-1430ish. Most cats will be trying to catnap around those times. I would support this little cafe, they do an AMAZINGGG job rescuing kittens that's been abused or traumatized by horrible owners. I've been here twice and although not too many successful interaction with cats ;; it's an amazing feeling to know these lil' guys are finding a warm and comforting home to go Catshit crazy in. ... Also, the cat that made me sit still for an hour as I watch whatever movie that was playin' on the projector... was probably adopted... I have conflicted emotions about this. I thought we had something special... . Prices are I believe 14$ per 30minutes & the drinks are somewhat superior to boba/coffee shops in quality&taste. imo. I hope they expand into a larger Cat Cafe cause why not.

Great space on all levels. Upstairs, coffee and treats. Wonderful service, and a fun menu. The main event, though, is in the basement - CATS! Like EVERY cat cafe I've ever been to (LA, San Diego, New York), there is a fee to spend time with the cats, and it's well worth it. Times are by the 1/2 hour and hour, or you can opt for an annual membership (highly recommend if you're going to go often, or if you support their mission). Their mission is to have all of their cats get adopted, and it's costly to feed them, house them, fix them, keep them healthy, provide litter, etc., so a fee to get some cat therapy is well worth the entrance price. The basement space is extremely large, with benches, chairs, couches, etc. to sit with the cats. There are movies playing in the back room to allow you to kick back and enjoy your time. In addition to the cats, a bookstore is part of the basement area, with books in an alternative/vampire/witch theme (not the best categorization, but great selection). Also, there are local artists' work featured on the walls. Please help support this local gem, and spread the word!

Perfect spot for a date especially if you're a cat lover. We stopped in for an hour and pet all the cats, only wish we had the room to adopt some already, but will definitely consider using this group as the spot we adopt pets from in the future. Hopefully we will be making this a regular date spot, and so great that the fee goes to care of the cats. Awesome idea, I wish there were more businesses like this!

The cats are restorative. Resident cat Sugar is my favorite, just the best book buddy cat ever. Take money, you WILL buy at least one book. Good coffee, haven't tried the snacks yet... But Cats! All the cats!

I LOVED IT!!! They take such good care of the cats, you can tell by the feeling of their coats. They know the names of all their cats, and let them have a big, open space to roam and enjoy themselves and the company of other cats. It's SO healthy for them to socialize. They also have very interesting books!! I looked through a few during my visit and I was very interested in some, I plan to go back for them!! If you're ever upset about the admittance fee, remember that they rescue these cats, feed them, and give them shelter. You're aiding their protection. They're wonderful people!!! Look at photos and captions for my limited knowledge on the cats.

I took my 10 year old daughter here it was great. I enjoyed an espresso drink before going in. There were plenty of cats to pet. Lots of books to look through. It was clean and pleasant inside. I had a hard time getting my daughter to leave. What a neat spot if you like cats, books, and coffee. We will go back.
